Florida law requires a “qualified interpreter” for court proceedings however, the definition is very broad:” an interpreter certified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or the Florida Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or an interpreter whose qualifications are otherwise determined by the appointing authority.” Under this law, no specialized legal interpreter is technically required, and in addition, it is within the judge’s discretion to decide if an interpreter is qualified.

In addition, Florida doesn’t fully guarantee that an interpreter will be provided in police interrogations.
“If the services of a qualified interpreter cannot be obtained, the arresting officer may interrogate or take a statement from such person, provided such interrogation and the answers thereto shall be in writing.”
